THE FOLLOWING IS A LETTER WRITTEN TO GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS BY SAX RAND, PRESIDENT OF WORLD ELITE WEIGHTLIFTING ASSOCIATION.

          Sirs,

May I respectfully remind you, that in all truth you are not in a position to give Mr. Hepburn anything, nor did he request that you do so, all that is desired is your acceptance to that he has already earned!

If you are cognizant, and I am moved to expect that you are, according to your credentials you know full well that prolonged drug ingestion increases bodily strength a minimum thirty five percent, not to mention the addition of body support gear, DO YOU CONDONE THIS SIRS?

I AM AFRAID THAT WE HAVE OVERESTIMATED THE CREDIBILITY OF YOUR PUBLICATION, at least as far as to the science, evolution, evaluation of physical strength is concerned. I pray that this does not run synonymous throughout your book!

                                                                         Respectfully yours,

                                                                                Sax Rand

FOLLOWING IS AN EXCERPT FROM A LETTER TO DOUG HEPBURN FROM A PAUL ANDERSON FAN.

          Dear Mr. Hepburn,

You were, and I bet you still are, a very strong man. Definitely one of the strongest ever, but Paul Anderson was stronger than you. Can you honestly expect people to believe that you were stronger than him? He bench pressed over 600 pounds in front of witnesses, he squatted 800 pounds for 10 reps several different times, he even squatted over 1100 for the Ed Sullivan Show. He is in the Guiness book of world records for his back lift of over 6000 pounds. He lost his amateur status when he was only 23! His strength kept growing for many years after that.

                                                                             Paul Gasper

a letter to Paul Gasper from Sax Rand )

          Mr. Gasper,

To introduce myself. I am the chairman and spokesman of the WEWA, World Elite Weightlifting Association. In matters of this kind I am obliged to represent Mr. Hepburn, in keeping with my position.

ALLOW ME TO EDIFY YOU SIR!

Firstly, I strongly suggest that you review Mr. Hepburn’s challenge to the world as shown on our site. A challenge, incidentally, that remains unanswered for three years. Mr. Hepburn has proven, and will prove beyond a shadow of doubt  that he is indeed what he claims via SCOTLAND YARD POLYGRAPH EXTENSIVE INVESTIGATION, ( Note, this investigative procedure has been accepted as Law in certain areas within the United States ) that Douglas Ivan Hepburn is indeed lifetime drug free! Need I say more…

If you Sir wish to question the above polygraph procedure as to its validity, which, incidentally, I feel you are obliged to do under the circumstances I strongly suggest that you immediately contact the pre-mentioned polygraph headquarters!

Do you think it is unwise sir to ignore the entirety of the immense accumulation of data compiled on our site directly related to the comprehension, and knowledge therein presented involving the analysis

Concerning the evolution of physical strength AND THOSE IMMORTAL DRUG FREE STRONGMEN THEREOF, AND MORE, DO YOU THINK IT IS INTELLIGENT TO IGNORE OR REJECT THE POSSIBILITY OF DRUG INGESTION WHEN UNDERGOING COMPARATIVE EVALUATION STRENGTH WISE BETWEEN ALL MODERN AGE STRONGMEN?

EVERY KNOWLEDGEABLE UNBIASED FOLLOWER OF THE STRENGTH WORLD KNOWS FULL WELL THAT DRUG INGESTION, NOT TO MENTION SUPPORT GEAR, ARTIFICIALLY ENHANCES BODILY STRENGTH A MINIMUM OF THIRTY FIVE PERCENT!

MAY I STATE AGAIN SIR THAT SIMPLE MATHEMATICS WILL REVEAL THE TRUTH, WHICH IS, FUNDAMENTALLY, THAT USAGE OF DRUGS HAS PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY, MORALLY, UNDERMINED THE POTENTIAL OF UNADULTERATED PHYSICAL STRENGTH AND THE GLORY OF SPORT ITSELF!

In closing, should you wish to pursue this matter further, I extend an invitation to you to assist in our crusade to reestablish the credibility of all modern time strongmen by rendering your assistance in the pursuance of an in depth investigation involving all modern day strength athletes, past and present in order to ascertain the absence of drug usage throughout their strength careers…….

May I hear from you at your earliest convenience,

                                                                        Yours in Strength,

                                                                                Sax Rand

PS.

If, or when Mr. Anderson’s credibility has been established as explained I will be more than willing to examine the possibility of his superiority strength-wise as outlined in Mr. Hepburn’s Challenge. The particulars of which, according to the gist of your letter, leaves me hesitant to believe that you are aware of same.

Further, may I suggest that you contact the Guiness book 2000 in order to reaffirm your statement.

LETTER MAILED TO DOUG HEPBURN FROM QUEBEC

“ Dear Mr. Hepburn, my name is  J.F. from Montreal, Canada. I thought that you would like to know that my grandfather met LOUIS CYR MANY TIMES AND WITNESSED FIRST HAND ALL OF HIS LIFTS MANY TIMES IN HIS LOCAL VILLAGE WHERE HE AND MY GRANDFATHER ARE FROM, to make a long story short, Grand Dad once told me THAT THE ONLY MAN THAT WAS STRONGER THAN LOUIS WAS DOUG HEPBURN. GRAND DAD TOLD ME THAT SOME OF LOUIS’ LIFTS WERE NOT WELL DOCUMENTED  AND WERE EXAGGERATED. Everybody knows your feats of strength are legendary, to say the least. Grand Dad told me that today strong men are not as strong as you were even though they have much better  gym food, vitamins, creatine, steroids, etc. ALL THE THINGS YOU NEVER HAD  YET YOU DID INCREDIBLE LIFTS NATURALLY IN THE TRUE MEANING OF THE WORD. Grand    Dad said, OK, THE RUSSIAN VASELI  ALEXZIEV HAD A GREAT PRESS BUT HOW MUCH OF THAT WAS NATURAL, SEVENTY FIVE PERCENT OR LESS WHICH MEANS THAT TWENTY FIVE PERCENT WAS POWERED BY DRUGS AND GOD KNOWS WHAT ELSE THEY USE. GRAND DAD SAW HIM LIFT IN THE MONTREAL OLYMPIC GAMES AND COMMENTED THAT IF DOUG HEPBURN WOULD HAVE HAD THE SAME FACILITIES AND TRAINING  HE WOULD HAVE LIFTED FIFTY PERCENT MORE THAN ALEXZIEV. Taking everything into consideration it leaves you the strongest men that ever lived in our period. You know, French Canadians love strong men and are always first to give credit where it is due, WHY CAN’T THE REST OF THE COUNTRY DO THE SAME! WE AGREE YOU ARE THE STRONGEST MAN , EVEN TODAY NO ONE CAN TOUCH YOUR LIFTS, THE RESULT OF A LIFETIME OF BEING NATURAL.

Take care, and a long life to you,

                                                                           J.F.

                       Personal instruction by Doug Hepburn,

And become a member of the greatest

Power Lifting team in the world !

          Dear Daniel,

Find your platform, your starting poundage, a weight that you can do fifteen sets of two reps with comfortably, this would be a weight that you could do four reps with if you forced yourself as if in competition. Build up to fifteen sets of three reps by increasing the total number of reps performed in your previous workout by one each succeeding training session until you can do the fifteen sets of three reps then in your next forthcoming workout start at fifteen sets of two reps and repeat as above. Apply this principle to each

Competitive lift. Do each lift as explained every third day, one at each training session, separate upper and lower body lifts alternatively every session. You can “ tinker” with light exercises, such as curling afterwards but no more.   ( for further guidance, contact me )

                                                                        Yours in strength,

                                                                           Doug Hepburn,

Dear Mr. N,

I represent Doug Hepburn in matters of this nature.

I am very familiar with the Anderson affair as I am the president and spokesman for the World Elite Weightlifting committee representing Mr. Hepburn, who, incidentally, holds all the power lifting records in the senior world division. Unfortunately, he has retired from competition as he has no opponents . He also held all the pressing, curling, and squatting records in the 1940’s…..He has competed with Mr. Anderson three times and beaten him three times in Olympic Lifting, bench pressing and curling. Mr. Hepburn is proven lifetime drug free and holder of career 200 world records. Nobody else has ever come close to this…When I told him about the pressing affair overhead in the back yard, according to several publications he just shrugged, smiled, and walked away. When I informed him about the Guiness book, he smiled again and said, “ Have you checked with Guiness lately!” When I told him that the consensus of opinion by world experts is that, generally speaking, since 1950 virtually all top level strength champions are ingesting drugs, he shook his head and walked away. This is the man Douglas Ivan Hepburn, the man who, upon request, answered questions regarding strength-building in a letter to Mr. Anderson, as he did for Bill Pearl, Reg Park and many, many, others throughout his life………….

                                                                   Yours sincerely,

                                                                        Sax Rand

P.S.

It comes to mind further pertinent information concerning

the character of Doug Hepburn, his concern for others. Doug personally took it upon himself to phone Paul Anderson when he first became ill. He had noted when first meeting Anderson several years before signs that his health was in jeopardy, as far as he was concerned, due to what he surmised to be the result of pushing prematurely or being overly misled in his budding strength career. It is his personal conclusion that this was the fundamental cause of his premature demise. In his later phone conversation with Paul he strongly suggested a radical alteration of his diet and exercise directed towards weight reduction and elimination of bodily toxins. Later when Paul become seriously ill he remarked that he should have taken Doug’s advice and that he certainly knew what he was talking about…..

Incidentally, I wish to recall an incident pertaining to the Mapes Hotel, Reno, Nevada and the fifteen thousand dollar prize involved. Mr. Hepburn phoned the hotel manager and informed him he was coming to attempt the lift. An hour later he received a return call requesting that he forgo his attempt. This story appeared in an Oregon newspaper a week later!

By Sax Rand

The foregoing letter was brought to my attention. I feel it’s import necessitates a public presentation to the people of Canada.

I am very familiar with the trials and tribulations that dogged Doug Hepburn throughout his life. I personally believe, as do many others worldwide, who remain unmesmerized by the antics of the media, that, in respect to his candor, tenacity, idealism and morality, his accomplishment in sport, that Doug Hepburn stands as the greatest Canadian athlete of all time!

Doug Hepburn has repeatedly offered his services to the Canadian Olympic weightlifting AAU, stating point blank that he would develop a Canadian weightlifting team the equal of the Russians, and was ignored. In his earlier lifting career he was thwarted from setting two world records by the Canadian AAU. He has never been approached for assistance by the Canadian AAU regardless that the Canadian lifters continually have experienced failure, or have great difficulty even qualifying to gain entry in world competition. HE PRESENTLY REFUSES TO ASSIST THE CANADIAN WEIGHTLIFTING AAU, STATING THAT WITHOUT HIS ASSISTANCE CANADA WILL NEVER DEVELOP A GOLD MEDALLIST OLYMPIC CHAMPION.

Doug Hepburn was once approached by the coach of the Canadian Olympic Team, he extended his hand to Doug , stating “ LET ME SHAKE THE HAND OF THE ONLY GOLD MEDALLIST CANADA WILL EVER HAVE!”

IN 1953 Doug defeated John Davis, twice American Olympic Champion, in Stockholm, Sweden. In the process Russia, for the first time, won the world team championship, they have never lost since.

A few years later, a Canadian coach toured Russia, visiting major weightlifting facilities. Upon returning to Canada he stated that Doug Hepburn’s strength building programs have been implemented throughout the entire country….

                                                                     SAX RAND

IT TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE

          Doug Hepburn answers…

          Dear W.P.,

Thanks for your support re the drug issue.

I was never presented with the opportunity to meet or discuss with Chuck Ahrens although I perused articles and several rare photos of him and from this I concluded that he was inclined to be uncommunicative, preferring solitude as his lifestyle. Resultantly, his activities, alone or in company, were brought to light second hand, as it were, and consequently subject to misinterpretation, exaggeration, or outright conjecture.

You state in your letter, “ he is reputed to have done one arm presses with up and around three hundred pounds. Further, you question, “ was he natural, certainly very powerful.”

Your reference to, “one arm press” is nebulous.. Was this a standing, overhead strict press? This is physically impossible, even with drugs! However, it is possible by utilizing “side-pressing”, or “bent-pressing” technique wherein the dumb-bell is supported with the elbow          on the hip whilst lowering the torso sideways and downwards until an arm-lock is established. You will note here that Arthur Saxon, one of the greatest of old time strong men one arm pressed upwards of three hundred and seventy pounds overhead by using the above procedure at a bodyweight of one hundred and eighty-five pounds! DRUG FREE!

                                                                          Yours in strength,

                                                                                Doug Hepburn

                                                                                            May 5th 2000

THE FOLLOWING LETTER WAS IN REPLY TO AN ARTICLE IN THE NATIONAL POST, CANADIAN NEWSPAPER BY BRAD EVENSON REGARDING, “ CANADIAN FINDS CELLULAR KEY TO MUSCULAR GROWTH.”

I take exception to several statements issued by Dr. Anderson. Especially those involving weightlifting. Canada has long basked in the glory given through the exploits of medallist Canadian lifters who repeatedly upheld the continuous sagging of Canada’s prestige in world-wide competition unto this day. In corroboration, and for edification, I am presently recognized throughout the world as the nominee for the title of the strongest natural man in modern history by a world challenge to duplicate the recognized strength lifts I performed in my time prior to the advent of drugs and has been publicized throughout the globe for three years. THE SAID CHALLENGE STANDS UNANSWERED..

If there are any that question this I would be pleased if they would do me the honor to discuss this at length publicly. More, I CHALLENGE THEM TO DO SO. I maintain that Mind stands a-priori in regard to extraordinary attainments in any and all fields of endeavor. I respectfully request that those who disagree voice their opinion of how I gained my strength and of course provide proof by presenting an individual superior to the level that I attained.. In this instance the silence of those doubters is generally construed as tantamount to acquiescence and may I say here that such silence is not golden, rather the opposite..

At a previous period, prior to a forthcoming Olympic Games in which the Canadian weight-lifting assembly on route passed through Vancouver, the coach of the pre-mentioned team paid me a visit. HE TOOK MY HAND A SAID, “ LET ME SHAKE THE HAND OF THE ONLY CANADIAN LIFTER THAT WILL EVER WIN A GOLD MEDAL FOR CANADA.”

In closing, I would appreciate your assistance to publish this letter before it becomes too late due to the failings of my aged crippled and diseased body. I HAVE DONE..

                                                                               Yours in strength,

                                                                                Douglas Ivan Hepburn

MUSCULAR REFLEX  theoretical analysis regarding acceleration of by Doug Hepburn.

“ An extraordinary activation of muscular contractility is brought about through the involvement of the intuitive process of higher mind or ( intuitive plane ) wherein “ Self “ may be temporarily dismissed , nullifying any, or all impediments effecting the swiftness of a forthcoming bodily movement causing an EXPLOSION OF AN UNINHIBITED FORCE OF ENERGY.

Extended concentration on the word EXPLOSION facilitates interaction with the intuitive plane over riding restriction.

To introduce my initial article on this volatile and pressing subject, if I may, I would like to open with a broad, sweeping statement regarding the phrase “hard gainer”. Being lifetime drug free, this term, somehow, just didn’t sit right with me. Suddenly, just the other day, it hit me. Why was it then that my strength carrier was easy sailing all the way? Strength came to me easily and I enjoyed every minute of it. Sure, there may be a few tough experiences, that’s life I guess. But in those happy days it didn’t put any dints on my inherent good nature or me.

You will note that history points out that most of the old school “clean” strong men were good-natured fellows and were not prone to bullying or bickering. This kind of nature, incidentally, has a lot to do with their great physical power. Mean men, morally unsound, rarely rise to the top of the strength totem pole and the few that did were “a flash in the pan”. Here today and gone tomorrow.

I realize this vital principle at the tender age of seventeen. At school I was off-times the butt of a joke. Names like “rolly polly”, “fatty arbuckle”, “blimp”, and the like. I didn’t let it affect me. I was determined not to sink to their level. I took it all good-naturedly. Let them harm themselves but not me.

You may think that I am putting too much emphasis and time on this single point. So in closing let me say that correct attitude alone could mean the difference between success or failure in your strength building carrier.

I maintain that anyone, and I mean ANYONE, can acquire super-strength if all the essential principles are present in an extended regimen of training. Remember, the term “regimen” of training refers to all activities within and without the actual work out period. As a matter of fact the activities outside the workout period are more important in the final analysis.

I imagine that we can now summarize “hard”, as in hard gainer in reference to this interpretation of the word “hard”. It brings to mind a statement made to me by a “hard” drinker who after years of futile attempts to stop finally managed to “beat the booze”. I asked him, “how in the hell did you do it?” A smile crossed his face “well, in my attempts to stop I constantly used the term ‘I’m on the wagon’ until one day it hit me when that little voice inside me said ‘remove the wagon’”. Nuff said.

Now, let’s get down to the “nitty-gritty”. Most of you clean guys are a hell of a lot better than you think you are. Now here’s the big one. All present day world powerlifting and weightlifting world records have to be reduced a minimum of 35% due to the possibility of drugs. Now simple math will show you where you really are in the world of strength. For example, let’s take a 1000-pound dead lift. Deduct 35%=350 pounds and we now have 650 pounds and a 700 pound bench press at 555 pounds, according to the consensus of worldwide experts.

I admit I may be slightly off the mark here with such a broad, sweeping statement. But let’s regress here by examining the lifts I performed publicly witnessed in the pre-steroid era as per my world challenge on this site, still standing unchallenged, incidentally this is not “pie in the sky”, this is the truth. The immutable fact is that if you deduct the 35% from the pre-mentioned top lifting performances you will note that the poundages showing are almost an exact duplication of the lists I performed in the late 1940’s. If I may add here that the present top lifters are invariably of a considerably heavier body weight when they established their records.

In summary, my conclusion is as follows: we presently have a wide schism or split in the lifting world this modern age between those that condone the present overall situation overlooking and accepting drug usage irregardless of the morality and sanctity of sport.

-AND-

The true believers that follow and uphold the glory and idealistic principles that have existed for many centuries that represent the foundation of our culture. May I congratulate all of you, for you represent the foundation of true sport.

Yours in strength,

Doug Hepburn
